Hanna Paulsberg – Gurls & Hanna Paulberg Concept – Een kennismaking Aanbevolen

  1. Op ‘Daughter of the Sun’ horen we veel Afrikaanse invloeden.

  1. Ik hoor veel ruimte in de liedjes. Bijvoorbeeld @ "Hemulen Tar Ferie". Voor jazz niet zo gebruikelijk. De sax klinkt ook erg melancholiek.

De ruimte is de plaats. :)

  1. This year you have had two releases. The first with Gurls and now a solo album with Magnus Broo. Was it a great difference making the two albums? The most obvious difference for me is probably that GURLS is more pop-related and the other project Hanna Paulsberg Concept is jazz. I love playing with and composing for GURLS, but the music we play together in Hanna Paulsberg Concept is closer to my heart, and the reason why I play saxophone.
  2. On “Daughter of the Sun” we hear many African influences. Is that the influence of Magnus or was that the plan before the start of making this album? The African influences have always been very present in the quartet, even before Magnus came in. We have our musical roots deep in the african-american jazztradition, it is a tradition we love and admire alot.
  3. I understand that you find the use of analogue instruments important, can you describe us why? It has always been important for me that music should sound organic, natural, alive. This is ofcorse possible with electronic instruments as well, but for me, acoustic instruments has always felt like a more natural way to achieve that quality. I think I like acoustic insttruments better as well because it is easier to play soft. When things get too loud, so many details dissapear, and that is a big turn off for me.
  4. How did you write the songs for the new album? Alone? Together? I made the songs alone, but the tune 'Serianna' is the bassist Trygve Fiske's tune that he wrote for his newborn daughter.
  5. I Hear a lot of space in the songs. For example @ “Hemulen Tar Ferie”. For jazz not so common. The sax sounds also very melancholic. Space is the place. :)
  6. I’m not a big jazz expert but for me this album is to most accessible album you made so far. Agree? I dont know, maybe? My father says this is the least accessible album I have made so far. But I actually think it is quite accessible.
  7. Has the title of the album a certain meaning or is it just a title? Our drummer was reading a book about Hatshepsut, one of the few female pharoas that ever excisted. Apparently she was a very strong and succesful leader, but after her death, the men who came after her tried to hide her accomplishments. So the album is atribute to her and all other strong women who have had to fight harder to get recognition because of their gender. She was called "Daughter of the Sun".
  8. With Gurls you stand on the Jazz International Festival @ Nijmegen and Rotterdam. Have you ever come to the Netherlands? And what do you expect from it? And what can we expect from you? I have been to North Sea Jazz Festival a couple of times, with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. But I am looking very forward to coming with GURLS, I think it will be alot of fun. From us, the crowd can excpect a groovy, intimate and fun concert, no doubt!

Thanks for your time and lots of success.
