Hellmut Lotti goes Metal
Helmut Lotti heeft zich in zijn reeds dertig jaar durende carrière al aan verschillende muziekgenres gewaagd: van Nederlandstalige variété en rock, klassieke muziek, Afrikaanse, Latijns-Amerikaanse en Russische muziek tot Elvissongs, popklassiekers, swing, soul en American standards. Zowat alles wat de Vlaamse succesvolle zanger aanraakt, verandert in goud of platina. Intussen heeft hij momenteel al om en bij 14 miljoen verkochte albums op zijn naam, en speelde hij al in concertzalen over heel de wereld.
Een genre dat hij nog niet verkend had? Metal. Althans tot september 2022, want toen nam Helmut voor rockzender Radio Willy de gekende hit ‘Run To The Hills’ van Iron Maiden onder handen. De cover werd al snel dé viral video van het najaar en werd zelfs opgepikt tot ver buiten onze landsgrenzen. Dit succes ontging ook de organisatoren van Graspop Metal Meeting niet, het populaire meerdaagse metalfestival waar Helmut aanstaande zondag in de ‘Metal Dome’ de grootste classics uit het hardrock- en metalgenre zal brengen voor een publiek van echte metalheads.
En dit smaakt duidelijk naar meer, want Helmut kondigt nu ook aan op 26 en 27 oktober naar Capitole Gent te trekken met ‘Hellmut Lotti Goes Metal’: Een uniek concert waarbij hij een uitgebreid hardrockrepertoire zal brengen met al zijn favorieten uit het genre, waaronder classics van Kiss, Whitesnake, AC/DC, Black Sabbath én natuurlijk Iron Maiden!

De multi-GRAMMY en Billboard Award-winnende band begint binnenkort aan hun International tour I know, it’s been a long time coming, met ook een stop in ons land. Mis hun concert niet, op 2 mei 2024 in het Koninklijk Circus in Brussel!
Train's klim naar de top begon in 1994, toen de oorspronkelijke 5 leden tellende band vastberaden een loyale thuisbasis opbouwde, wat leidde tot hun debuutalbum. De wervelende woordspelingen van Meet Virginia bezorgden hen hun eerste onwaarschijnlijke radiohit en Drops of Jupiter uit 2001 bracht hen naar de multi-platina status dankzij de met een dubbele Grammy Award bekroonde titelsong die 10 maanden in de Top 40 stond, dubbel platina behaalde in de VS en hen de GRAMMY Award 2001 voor Beste Rocksong opleverde.
De groep won nog een GRAMMY Award in 2011 voor hun wereldwijde hit Hey, Soul Sister van hun multi-platina album Save Me, San Francisco. Hey, Soul Sister was bovendien de best verkopende en meest gedownloade single van 2010 en bereikte in 2021 de RIAA Diamond status.
THE SHOW - a tribute to ABBA zal op 17 mei 2024 in Vorst Nationaal een eerbetoon brengen aan de 50e verjaardag van ABBA's doorbraak, hun legendarische muziekcollectie en het succesvolle verhaal van deze iconische popgroep.
Sinds hun ontstaan 50 jaar terug, is de muziek van ABBA nog steeds levend en ontzettend populair. De jubileumshow zal een overzicht brengen van ABBA's grootste hits aller tijden en zelfs nummers van het gloednieuwe album Voyage, dat in 2021 werd uitgebracht.
Met bijna 800 concerten in 50 landen en meer dan 2 miljoen verkochte tickets heeft THE SHOW de muziek van ABBA een heel nieuw leven gegeven. THE SHOW trakteert het publiek op de grootste hits van ABBA in een 2 uur durend spektakel. Het is een liveconcert dat de evolutie van ABBA volgt, van vóór het Eurovisiesongfestival tot hun grote internationale succes. Enkele van de grootste hits op het menu zijn Waterloo, SOS, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Money Money Money en Knowing Me Knowing You, met daarnaast nog enkele verrassingen uit het enorme repertoire van ABBA.
Het publiek kan zich verheugen op de ervaren gitarist Lasse Jonsson: Lasse Jonsson heeft meegewerkt aan de opnames van ABBA’s meest recente album Voyage, en speelde in de musicals "Mamma Mia" en in "Mamma Mia - The Movie". Hij werkte bovendien mee aan de opnames en soundtrack van Mamma Mia 1 en 2. Naast de musicals die Björn en Benny opvoerden, speelde Lasse ook in Hyde Park toen ABBA werd gevierd door artiesten als Kylie Minogue, Elaine Page en Chaka Khan en diverse andere artiesten.
THE SHOW is niet zomaar een zoveelste goedkope ABBA-lookalike. Wat THE SHOW echt van de rest onderscheidt, is dat de twee zangeressen niet alleen sterk op Agnetha en Anni-Frid lijken, maar dat ze ook zo gelijkaardig zingen dat zelfs de meest kritische fans meteen overtuigd zijn. De twee zangeressen wonnen een grote Zweedse talentenjacht met hun act als de ABBA-dames, en nu delen ze in THE SHOW hun talent met de wereld.

Na het neerzetten van vijf uitverkochte shows in de Lotto Arena in 2022, liet CAMILLE afgelopen weekend een uitverkocht Kursaal Oostende maar liefst zes keer uit zijn voegen springen, waarmee ze haar populaire SOS-tour door Vlaanderen op een spectaculaire manier afsloot. Jazz Cats: het nieuwe Kortrijkse jazzfestival georganiseerd door Wilde Westen, Muziekcentrum Track, Pand.A en Parkjazz lanceert een reeks Jazz Cats Club Shows en voorziet jazzliefhebbers van een flinke dosis jazz in een gezellig kader.
De Jazz Cats Club Shows willen zowel jong, beloftevol (inter)nationaal talent, als gevestigde waarden een podium geven. De visie blijft de Jazz Cats festivalvisie: programmeren zonder oogkleppen, met een hele ruime kijk op jazz als muziekgenre en een belofte die een gezonde mix van traditionele jazz en heel veel ruimte voor experiment garandeert.

Young curators
Wilde Westen startte een zoektocht naar 'Young Curators'. Jongeren tussen 18 en 26 jaar konden kandideren om een jaar lang hun ding te doen binnen onze programmatie. Uit een grote groep kandidaten selecteert Wilde Westen vijf mensen.
Ze krijgen tijdens het concertseizoen volledig carte blanche om enkele avonden naar hun voorkeur in te vullen. Zowel de programmatie, de communicatie als de productie van hun concertavonden ligt volledig in hun handen. Young Curators aan de macht, uiteraard met de hulp van Wilde Westen: die hen doorheen dit traject zal begeleiden met workshops en advies.

BOS! FESTIVAL: GROEN EN GEZELLIG IN BERGELEN
Voor de editie van BOS! festival strijken de concertorganisatoren van Wilde Westen weer neer in provinciedomein Bergelen in Gullegem, dé plek waar je veel genres kan ontdekken en dat in een bijzonder groene en gezellige sfeer.
Bergelen vormt het unieke decor van BOS! festival. BOS! omarmt dan ook met veel respect de fauna en flora van Bergelen, en maakt daarom groene keuzes. Zo wijst de organisatie wegwerpbekers af, worden de decibels wat lager gehouden en vind je enkel vegetarische en veganistische foodtrucks op het terrein.
“Met Wilde Westen houden we ervan om genres te laten blenden. Ook op BOS! gaat het alle kanten uit. Door de locatie en de rustige line-up is het een heel gezinsvriendelijk festival. Kinderen onder de 12 jaar mogen dan ook gratis naar BOS!

Wilde Westen wordt partner van nieuw Europees project 'Sounds Now'
Een nieuw samenwerkingsproject rond curatorschap en integratie in hedendaagse muziek en geluidskunst
Sounds Now is een grootschalig vierjarig Europees samenwerkingsproject, geleid door een consortium van muziekfestivals en productiehuizen, gericht op de verspreiding van hedendaagse muziek en cultuur. Het project is het resultaat van een jarenlange collectieve discussie en reflectie over onze rol als curatoren en de sociaal-politieke verantwoordelijkheden die dat met zich meebrengt.
Sounds Now richt zich op de manier waarop curatorschap steeds hervalt in dezelfde patronen van macht en uitsluiting op alle niveaus in onze samenleving. Het project draait rond het actief stimuleren van diversiteit binnen ons vakgebied. Op die manier wil Sounds Now een brede waaier aan ervaringen en perspectieven creëren die zowel de geluidskunst als hedendaagse muziek in de toekomst zullen definiëren.
Het project omvat een reeks acties, waaronder congressen, onderzoek, labs voor curatoren van buiten de new music wereld, mentorschapsprogramma's van curatoren, componisten en experts, producties met betrokken kunstenaars met vraagstukken als diversiteit, ...
Sounds Now wordt ondersteund door het Creative Europe-programma van de Europese Unie.

Belgian five-piece Whispering Sons return with the infectious new single The Talker. Sounding unlike any other track they’ve ever released before, The Talker is threaded around a joyous riff the band almost dismissed as “too frivolous” and fizzles with sarcastic humour as it dissects the nature of social control. Whispering Sons’ calling card post-punk atmospheres are there and so too is singer Fenne Kuppens’ distinctive contralto, but an expanded emotional spectrum has been added to the band’s foundations. “It's just so different from anything we did before,” notes Kuppens. “It is so playful but at the same time there is still a cynical streak running through that track.”
The Talker had been the subject of debate for a long time before the band finally decided that it had earned its place in their catalogue. Now it’s an essential part of the story. It’s a song that is bound to introduce the listener to a more open and daring Whispering Sons and the first single to be released from their brand-new album, which is expected to come out in 2024.

The video for the single acts as the middle chapter in a three-part short film. The full film, entitled Balm (After Violence) will see its premiere at the Film Fest Ghent with a special screening and live performance.
The video hits the vein of the song, being very playful and energetic with a slight absurdist feel. Heleen Declercq is the director of the full short film. By focusing on connection, Heleen has the ability to capture the essence of every subject she touches. Portraying the sensibility of the individual with the use of music and sound which always holds a special place in her work. And on the strength of ever striving to portray a sensible image through her lens – Heleen is most comfortable with the use of a docu-style in all genres.
The band will perform a series of exclusive small club shows in the autumn before going on a full European tour in spring 2024. They will also play this year’s Iceland Airwaves Festival and support The KVB in London.
Even voorstellen - Teenage Fanclub - Nothing lasts forever
On 22nd September Teenage Fanclub will release their new album Nothing Lasts Forever via their own label PeMa in the UK/Europe and Merge in the US. The band share “Back To The Light”, the latest single to be released from the album. The track follows lead single “Foreign Land” and album highlight “Tired Of Being Alone”.
“Back To The Light” was written by Norman Blake who says: “I liked the idea of using being in a band as a metaphor for a personal relationship. They are not entirely dissimilar experiences. Like a few others on the album, this song has saxophone on it. The first time we’ve had that since Songs From Northern Britain. Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo) played those parts; we really like the richness it brings to the song. Steve will be with us when we head out on tour in October in Europe.”

Navigating love's curious contradictions is a particularly dominant theme in the album's lead single 'There For You'. Emeli's timeless voice balances strident determination and soft vulnerability in a stirring soul-pop song full of subtle Eighties textures: from the thrum of the bass to the thump of the beats, as well as the classic sound of the Yamaha DX7 and a euphoric saxophone solo. Co-written with music manager and writer Daniel Caruana and produced by Daniel McKenzie, Emeli says the track "came together so naturally".
She adds, "'There For You' is about how I'll always have love for the people I've been with. Even if I'm pissed off with them for a couple of years, I'll always care for them, I'll always want to know they're OK. Because once you've committed to that love with someone, it doesn't just go away."
'How Were We To Know' is beautifully consistent, but that doesn't mean that Emeli stays in the same lane. Far from it. The dramatic theatrical spectacle of the title track is one of her finest vocal performances, her resolution growing from a fragile falsetto to the soaring, unfiltered emotion of its climax. 'My Boy Likes To Party' couldn't be more different, with Emeli's husky croon atop an alt-pop banger with trap-tinged beats, while the gospel flavoured 'Nothing We Can't Handle' is an uplifting hymn of support and 'True Colours' applies similar qualities in a defiant expression of self-love.
The album's intimacy was further unlocked as Emeli called on trusted collaborators, including Mac & Phil and Jonny Coffer (key contributors to her second album 'Long Live The Angels') and Ollie Green (who worked on last year's critically adored 'Let's Say For Instance' including the hit 'Brighter Days').
Emeli Sandé is confirmed to headline the Royal Festival Hall on November 11th as part of this year's EFG Jazz Festival London. Her previous touring highlights have included headlining London's O2 arena, recording an early Royal Albert Hall show for a subsequent live album, touring as guest to Coldplay and - of course - her unforgettable performances at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Her many awards include four BRITs, three MOBOs and two Ivor Novellos.

Irish artist Hilary Woods returns today with her deeply sonic self-produced new album 'Acts of Light', set for release Nov 3rd via Sacred Bones. To coincide with its announcement, the dynamic and evocative first single "Where The Bough Has Broken" is now online alongside a video created by Woods that exhibits her singular music and filmic aesthetic. Of the track and video Woods says the following:
"Made from old newsreels of archive footage, this video muses on the beauty of community and resilience, made to a piece of music that celebrates connection and the specificity and transience of time, space, and human expression. This music video is a visual love letter to the Dublin City I grew up in, to the spirit of familial roots and the extraordinary moments in ordinary life that leave their lasting impression."
Woods also announces today two new Dublin shows added to her upcoming tour dates in Portugal, the UK and Europe throughout September, October, November and December.
Acts of Light is a fugue comprised of nine slow hypnotic dirges.
Here on her third full length record, Woods’ experimentalism and sonic excavations lean into the intimacy and tenderness of this intuitive compositional work.
Following her explorations in feeling and physicality through sound which culminated in her 2021 EP Feral Hymns, Acts of Light is a disquiet personal offering to wilderness, loss, absence, mystery and love supreme. Vulnerability, majesty and candour, elicited with drone, noise, synth, double bass, field recordings and sacred choral chant, compose its private ritual.
Acts of Light is a resonant, rich and weighted lament that is both subterranean and chasmal whilst simultaneously its detailed tendrils awaken hidden forms that emerge from the shadows with each listen. Textural dust and speckled light move slowly and expansively here, through a sonic and sensory rite of passage where Woods’ moving compositions confide in us feeling to be received with the entire body.
Written, recorded, mixed and produced over a span of two years between the west coast of Ireland and Dublin, Woods recorded the choristers of the Palestrina choir in the Pro Cathedral Dublin, together with the voices of Galway City Chamber Choir. Strings were recorded by Jo Berger Myhre in Oslo, whilst field recordings were recorded nomadically throughout her time spent travelling through the north west of Spain.

Festival van de Vrijheid - Van 12 tot 21 oktober 2023 in Brussel
Voor zijn 22ste editie zal het Festival van de Vrijheid, georganiseerd door de vzw Bruxelles Laïque, zich richten op het thema ‘Dominantie’. Een reeks evenementen met vele dimensies, te ontdekken van 12 tot 21 oktober 2023 in het Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles.
Politiek en artistiek, subversief en feestelijk, het Festival van de Vrijheid heeft zich de opdracht gesteld om de mechanismen die de vrijheden in de weg staan te identificeren en te bespreken, of het nu gaat om culturele, politieke of institutionele vrijheden. Onder de vele evenementen die plaatsvinden in het Théâtre National is een reeks debatten, het echte sociaal-politieke hart van het festival.
Naast de structurele kwesties die in ‘Dominantie’ aan bod komen, gaat het onder andere over het ecologische vraagstuk en de wurggreep van de mens op de natuur, de relatie tussen mannen en vrouwen, en overheersing door instellingen zoals politie en gevangenissen. Meer mondiale kwesties zoals migratie en mondiale financiering worden aangevuld met meer maatschappelijke onderwerpen zoals dominantie binnen het gezin en intimiteit. Er zullen veel mogelijkheden zijn voor het publiek om te participeren, en dat alles is gratis.
Een niet te missen evenement is de internationale documentairewedstrijd. Het is de gelegenheid om filmmakers te ontmoeten die zich wereldwijd inzetten voor mensenrechten en sociale rechtvaardigheid.
Op het cultureel programma van Festival van de Vrijheid staan twee toneelstukken gepland: ‘Pouvoir’ van Une Tribu Collectif en ‘Les monologues de Gaza’, een leeservaring van een toneelstuk gebaseerd op de getuigenissen van tieners tussen 10 en 14 jaar, tijdens de Israëlische militaire operatie Gegoten Lood, uitgevoerd in de Gazastrook in de winter van 2008 – 2009. Een ontmoeting tussen Brussel en Gaza en deze jongeren die intussen volwassen zijn.
De grote zaal ontvangt opnieuw een top line-up. Enkele van de sterren op de affiche zijn Patty Smith, Dominique A., Tiken Jah Fakoly en Imany. Dit zijn slechts een aantal van de favorieten die een divers publiek aanspreken, hongerig naar de geest van vrijheid die het handelsmerk is van het Brusselse festival.

Vanishing Twin furthers their exploration of decidedly experimental territories with new album, Afternoon X, set for release on 6th October on Fire Records.
Initially formed by the singer and multi-instrumentalist, Cathy Lucas, in 2015, following a series of line-up changes, Vanishing Twin is now the tightly honed, London based collective of Lucas, the drummer Valentina Magaletti (Holy Tongue, Tomaga, Moin) and bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin). Harnessing the diverse backgrounds and touchstones of its members - Lucas’ left-field song-craft, Magaletti’s singular approaches to experimental percussion, and Mukai’s long history in the production of electronic music - over nearly a dozen releases since 2016, the band has refined a hypnotic sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop.
Afternoon X encounters Vanishing Twin in the throes of a marked creative shift during which each member took on less defined roles and a more collaborative approach, more like the work of three co-producers than a band. Recorded over the course of late 2022 and early 2023, the album is the product of a series of marathon recording sessions by various configurations of Lucas, Magaletti, and Mukai. The resulting hours of material was then reworked and developed, allowing for chance moments of highly responsive creativity and the incorporation practices drawn from experimental music - improvisation, non-hierarchical processes, musique concrète / sound collage, and the use of non-instrumental sound sources and field-recording - to form the root of each of the album’s eight tracks.
Crafted from a playful balance of humour and rigour, with each member embracing the role of the multi-instrumentalist and process over outcome, Afternoon X furthers of trajectory of exploration that has defined Vanishing Twin’s recent releases. Pursuing creative openness and an expanded palette of references and sources, Magaletti’s metronomic, cycling patterns and the pulse of Mukai’s bass lines remain at the core of their sound, but these rooted rhythms now form the groundwork for the pursuit of greater tonal, textural, and structural range.
These eight fluttering abstractions, culled, collaged, and built upon from a vast constellation of instruments, samples, and unclaimed sources. Lucas employs her voice as an instrument and a generator of raw sound, weaving surreal imagery and uncanny juxtapositions amongst the dance and propellant drive. From infectious grooves of the album’s title track and the constrained minimalism of “Subito”, to the ambitious heights of pieces like ‘The Down Below’ and Lazy Garden, which unfurl a form psychedelic avant-gardism on the scope and scale of David Axelrod and Scott Walker.

VI.BE (voorheen Poppunt) en livesector organiseren samen ambitieus kansenparcours voor nieuw talent
Ancienne Belgique, Poppunt, Clubcircuit vzw, Formaat en de Brusselse Jeugdhuizen, Cactus Muziekcentrum, Het Depot, Muziekodroom, muziekclub N9, Trix, De Casino, Democrazy, De Zwerver, Het Entrepot, Nosta, Wilde Westen en 4AD presenteren Sound Track, een gloednieuw live- en kansenparcours voor artiesten met talent en ambitie. Met Sound Track gaan spelers uit de Vlaamse en Brusselse muzieksector samen op zoek naar de sound van hun regio.
Sound Track is een laagdrempelige manier om het talent uit de regio’s naar boven te stuwen. Een nieuwe generatie kan zich aanmelden via VI.BE platform.

BRDCAST april
BRDCST is terug van weggeweest. AB’s meest avontuurlijke en genrefluïde festival geeft in april een podium aan het spannendste wat avant-garde pop, futuristische hiphop, Afrikaanse black metal, electronica, jazz en improvisatie te bieden heeft. Ze kondigt haar eerste namen aan en legt de focus op Oost-Afrikaanse electronica, muzikale odes en experiment. Programma zie site .

Boterhammen in de stad en Feeërieën
AB sluit de zomervakantie traditiegetrouw af met haar twee legendarische en gratis festivals. Het strijkt opnieuw neer in Gare Maritime op de site Tour & Taxis. Van Boterhammen in de Stad mag je over de middag Nederlandstalig entertainment verwachten, terwijl Feeërieën elke avond een muzikaal smorgasbord serveert.

Op 10 november 2023 is het exact 15 jaar geleden dat Wannes Van de Velde overleed. Op die dag brengt BLP records één van zijn bekendste nummers, 'Ik wil deze nacht in de starten verdwalen', uit op vinylsingle. Op de A-kant staat de tweetalige versie die in 1973 als single verscheen naar aanleiding van de Belgische film 'Home Sweet Home'. Op de B-kant staat de versie uit 1976 die nooit eerder op single verscheen. De single komt uit op wit vinyl in een beperkte oplage van 500 exemplaren.

Ook op vrijdag 10 november vindt in De Roma in Borgerhout Wannes’ Muziekfeest plaats, een tribute concert ter ere van Wannes Van de Velde. Een hele rits muzikanten waaronder mede-initiatiefnemer Jan De Smet zullen er putten uit het repertoire van de overleden muzikant.
