Ryuichi Sakamoto - 'Opus' out now !

Opus is een verzameling van werken uitgevoerd en gecomponeerd door de legendarische componist, afkomstig van zijn laatste concert in de herfst van 2022, voor zijn dood begin 2023. Het album is gebaseerd op de concertfilm van zijn zoon Neo Sora en is net digitaal uitgebracht op 9 augustus via Milan Records. CD- en Vinylversies volgen later dit jaar.
De 20 tracks tellende release bevat drie volledig nieuwe composities van Sakamoto en nieuwe arrangementen van bestaande stukken uit zijn bijna 50-jarige carrière.

Carefully curated by Sakamoto, selections include iconic film scores and Yellow Magic Orchestra classics alongside pieces reflective of his eclectic career. "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence," perhaps oneof his most famous melodies, and beloved works "Andata," "Aqua"and "Trioon " are represented as well as entirely new or never-before-recorded compositions. "for Jóhann", dedicated to the late composer and Sakamoto's friend Johann Johannson, "BB," a tribute to filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci, and "2018 02 19," a previously unreleased solo piano track, are all new to Sakamoto's vast repertoire.

Sakamoto provided a statement on the project after it was recorded, saying: "The project was conceived as away to record my performances—while I was still able to perform—in a way that is worth preserving for the future.  In some sense, while thinking of this as my last opportunity to perform, I also felt that I was able to break new grounds. Simply playing a few songs a day with a lot of concentration was all I could muster at this point in my life. Perhaps due to the exertion, I felt utterly hollow afterwards, and my condition worsened for about a month. Evenso, I feel relieved that I was able to record before my death — a performance that I was satisfied with."

1952 – 2023
Artist and musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto, passed away on the 28th of March, 2023.  He was 71 years old.
While undergoing treatment for cancer discovered in June 2020, Sakamoto continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would allow. He lived with music until the very end.
