Tien jaar na hun artistieke afscheid slaan Gregory Frateur en Nicolas Rombouts opnieuw de handen in elkaar. Het resultaat is 'ECHO_RE_ECHO', een album dat zijn oorsprong vindt in de gelijknamige performance met dansgezelschap WArd/waRD en choreograaf Ann Van den Broek. De plaat verkent de kracht van stem en bas in een gelaagde dialoog tussen intimiteit en explosie, tussen stilte en storm. Met 'ECHO_RE_ECHO' leggen Frateur en Rombouts een klanklandschap bloot dat even persoonlijk als universeel is. Het album ademt zowel de intensiteit van een live-performance als de intimiteit van een innerlijke dialoog. Het is een zoektocht naar betekenis, een oproep tot verbinding en een ode aan de kracht van echo’s die blijven resoneren.


De geschiedenis van Frateur en Rombouts is er een van intensieve samenwerking en diepe artistieke verwantschap. Als drijvende krachten achter Dez Mona schreven ze een belangrijk hoofdstuk in de Belgische muziekgeschiedenis. Nadien vonden ze elk hun eigen weg, maar bleef de onderlinge resonantie voelbaar. 'ECHO_RE_ECHO' markeert hun herontmoeting en bewijst dat hun muzikale gesprek niets aan intensiteit heeft ingeboet.

“Na tien jaar opnieuw samen muziek maken met Nicolas voelde vanzelfsprekend. Stem en bas spreken dezelfde taal: die van kwetsbaarheid, kracht en resonantie", aldus Gregory Frateur. "De plaat verkent thema’s als zichtbaarheid, authenticiteit, verlies en hoop. 'ECHO_RE_ECHO' beweegt tussen existentiële vragen en persoonlijke bekentenissen. De songs vertrekken vaak uit vragen of onrust, maar zoeken altijd naar verbinding. Voor mij is dit album een echo die niet verdwijnt, maar telkens iets nieuws oproept."

De songs van 'ECHO_RE_ECHO' bewegen tussen existentiële vragen en persoonlijke bekentenissen. In 'Seen/Scene' draait alles rond de menselijke hunkering naar erkenning, terwijl 'Nothing to be Liked' een pleidooi brengt voor authenticiteit boven conformisme. 'Wrap Your Mind Around It' is een reflectie op een wereld in vlammen. Donker, intens en toch hoopvol in een zoektocht naar licht. 'Restless Sleeper' en 'Call It an Escape' omarmen dan weer de nacht, stilte en introspectie.

'Who Are We Exactly' stelt de vraag wie we zijn op onze moeilijkste momenten: wanneer frustratie en onbegrip ons minder mooie kanten naar boven halen. Het nummer houdt ons een confronterende spiegel voor en suggereert dat we pas echt helden worden wanneer we mildheid en kindness toelaten.

De kwetsbaarheid van verlies en verlangen wordt indringend voelbaar in 'Don’t Let Go of My Hand', terwijl 'Are We Doing This' de urgentie van nieuwe keuzes en vernieuwing bezingt. Het slotakkoord 'Our Children' opent een venster naar hoop en toekomst.

Gregory Frateur is zanger, componist en tekstschrijver. Zijn unieke stemtimbre – tegelijk fragiel en krachtig – leverde hem een uitgesproken plaats op in het Belgische muzieklandschap. Met Dez Mona bouwde hij een reputatie op als een van de meest expressieve stemmen van zijn generatie. Doorheen de jaren werkte Frateur samen met uiteenlopende artiesten en ensembles, steeds op zoek naar de grenzen tussen muziek, poëzie en podiumkunsten. Een constante in zijn creatieve traject is de samenwerking met muzikant Craig Ward, die hem al jaren als klankbord en mede-architect bij het schrijven van lyrics ondersteunt.

Nicolas Rombouts is bassist, componist en producer. Als medeoprichter van Dez Mona drukte hij een onmiskenbare stempel op de sound van de band met zijn warme contrabas en verfijnde composities. Hij groeide uit tot een veelzijdige muzikant, actief in jazz, pop en cross-overprojecten. Rombouts staat bekend om zijn inventieve spel, zijn muzikale diepgang en zijn vermogen om genres en werelden te verbinden.

King Princess – the project of Brooklyn-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and actor Mikaela Straus – returns next month with her triumphant third record Girl Violence, out September 12th on section1. Following previous singles “RIP KP” and “Cry Cry Cry,” new single “Girls” is out today and finds King Princess at the mercy of a toxic relationship. Characterized by Mikaela’s raspy vocals, moody organ, and backup singers reminiscent of romantic 50s pop, “Girls” is a sultry track that gives into unhealthy desire, which explodes into a final release of distorted guitar. The song embodies the darker side of Girl Violence, where King Princess entertains chaos and self-destruction for the sake of quelling her hunger for companionship and pleasure. King Princess puts it simply: “Girls. Bring me to my knees.”

To celebrate the release of Girl Violence, King Princess is partnering with a curated selection of tattoo shops - all run by women and/or members of the LGBTQ+ community - in the US, Canada, Europe, LATAM and Australia for a global flash tattoo event on Saturday, September 13. Each tattoo shop will be creating custom flash sheets based on the album’s visual world, and everyone tattooed will be entered into a raffle to win prizes, including signed vinyl and prints, Girl Violence merch, and guest list spots for upcoming KP shows.  King Princess, section1/Partisan, and each participating tattoo shop will be making donations to local charities who support the LGBTQ+ communities.

Stephen Colbert, and King Princess recently sat down with The New Yorker to discuss the new record. Made in collaboration with Jake Portrait (Lil Yachty, Alex G, Unknown Mortal Orchestra), and Aire Atlantica (breakthrough: SZA’s “Low”), Girl Violence is the sound of Straus picking up the pieces after her world fell apart – fighting for freedom, stepping back from the limelight and major label system, breaking up, moving away, and returning to NYC where she was born and raised. Through it all, she somehow found the agency and creative spirit to fight the misconceptions and create the album she was destined to make, in a potent return to self. Perennially underestimated, she now wields the chip on her shoulder as a weapon, upping the ante and taking the reins on Girl Violence.

    Sometimes no matter how hard you try, your life can still fall apart. Girl Violence, the third album from King Princess, is the sound of Mikaela Straus picking up the pieces of a world left shattered.
    “Girl violence is very sneaky,” Straus says. “It's not physical, it’s deeply emotional, spiritual, and spooky. Women are both amazing and sinister—including myself—and it's my curiosity to understand all the love, loss, and changes that come out of my love for women. Why are we so inclined to cause and receive chaos? If you've experienced even an iota of it, then you'll have a story to tell. And these are mine.”
    The songs on Girl Violence are probing and vulnerable, but also nuanced, sensual, and bold; a product of her physical homecoming — leaving LA after seven years for Brooklyn where she was born + raised. “I was not loving life, I didn't feel grounded at all. I realized my feet were dangling for years,” she says of her end-stage time in LA. “Once I was back in the arms of the city I love, I started to feel easier and lighter about hard decisions that were actually in my best interest.”
    Accordingly, the album brims with an exhilarating sense of freedom, stemming from Straus’ decision to leave behind the major label system that had defined much of her story up to this point. While not strictly a “breakup record” in the traditional sense, Girl Violence was in part born out of a newly-found romantic freedom following the end of a long relationship. Finally feeling at home and left to her own devices, she was able to tap into the force that fueled some of her earliest creative excitement and breakthroughs.
    She zeroed in on it: one studio, a tight-knit NYC crew, and a few months of immersion. She found kindred-spirit collaborators in Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait (credits include Lil Yachty, Alex G), and Aire Atlantica (breakthrough: SZA’s “Low”) and inspiration in tracks by IDLES, Massive Attack’s Mezzanine (her bedrock reference for production/mixing/vibe), and Beatles live sessions. Girl Violence slowly started to take shape.
    This collection may be “a celebration of the craziness of femininity, in awe and admiration of the derangement,” but it also stands as a document of Straus’ multifaceted evolution. She’ll always be in motion with her quicksilver humor and curious, open heart.
    
    “It's about recognizing that we have an abundance of love in our life,” she says. “I don't think I will ever lose the ability to stop loving or creating big loves. You can have crazy fallouts and breakups, but you aren't incapable of loving, if anything, I think it makes you more capable.”
    
    Although Girl Violence centralizes relationship dynamics in all their cerebral, emotional, and carnal glory, above all else she interrogates the shifting sands of self. How you view yourself and move through the world, what you understand and acknowledge, and the logic you still decide to abandon—for desire, for adventure, for the ride. Through it all, she offers up Girl Violence not as an answer, but as an echo—one that’s yours to claim, distort, and make your own.
