Sdban Records presents first-ever reissue of René van Helsdingen's 1978 debut album ‘Coal Mining’

Sdban Records is proud to announce the first official reissue of Coal Mining, the 1978 debut album by Dutch jazz pianist René van Helsdingen. This album marks a significant milestone—the beginning of van Helsdingen's decades-spanning career as an innovative and independent musician.
Born in 1957 in Jakarta, Indonesia, but holding Dutch nationality, René van Helsdingen began classical piano studies in the Netherlands in the early 1960s. While initially following in his family's footsteps by enrolling in mining engineering at the Technical University of Delft, his passion for music ultimately prevailed. His academic path may have diverged, but it set the stage, both figuratively and literally, for what would become an extraordinary musical career.
Coal Mining was originally released on Munich Records, a respected Dutch jazz and roots label founded by music producer and musician Job Zomer. The album features a blend of jazz influences from giants such as Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, and Bill Evans, and showcases van Helsdingen's distinctive voice as a composer and pianist at the very start of his professional journey.
The record includes contributions from a rich ensemble of musicians, including Wim Essed (bass), Klaus Flenter (guitar), Børge Ring (double bass), Henk Zomer (drums), Martijn Nesenberend (drums), Dick Pluim (bass), and even a student orchestra formed during van Helsdingen's time at Delft University.
Often mistakenly referred to as Piano, a result of the album's back cover design prominently featuring the word, Coal Mining is both a literal and symbolic title. It alludes not only to van Helsdingen's brief academic past, but to the depth and labor of jazz creation itself: layered, gritty, and forged under pressure.
A year after the album's release, van Helsdingen moved to Los Angeles to continue his jazz studies. While living in Hollywood, he shared a house with future musical collaborators including Kent Brinkley, Essiet Okon Essiet, Brian Batie, John Rigby, Edmond Allmond, David Best and John Butler. Even in the early stages of his career, van Helsdingen displayed the entrepreneurial spirit that would define his path, self-releasing albums and even pioneering an early form of crowdfunding by selling 400 ad spaces on a record sleeve to finance an LP project. To support himself, he also worked for a while as a salesman: "To make ends meet in Hollywood, I worked as a telephone salesman for dental supplies. In the evenings, I would call dentists at home and send them my LP to break the ice. That way, I earned their trust, they bought the amalgam, and I'd get my 10% commission on the sales". After his jazz studies in Los Angeles, he performed extensively in Europe, Canada, the U.S., Australia and Asia, often traveling with his own 'Stage bus', which housed both a stage and instruments.
In August 2018, van Helsdingen was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Despite the physical challenges brought on by the condition, he continues to perform and compose music. His openness about the diagnosis—shared publicly in a 2019 documentary—has helped raise awareness of Parkinson's and the role of creativity and improvisation as tools for resilience.
Now, nearly five decades after its initial release, Coal Mining is finally receiving a well-deserved reissue. Introducing a new generation of listeners to the raw talent and visionary beginnings of a true European jazz original.

Goed nieuws voor fans van psychedelische grooves en dromerige gitaren, want Tame Impala komt binnenkort naar België! Op dinsdag 5 mei 2026 komt de Australische band naar de AFAS Dome (voormalig Sportpaleis) in Antwerpen met hun 'Deadbeat Tour'. Tickets zijn beschikbaar via livenation.be.
De tournee volgt op de release van hun nieuwe album 'Deadbeat', dat verschijnt op 17 oktober. Met "Loser", "End Of Summer" en gloednieuwe single "Dracula" (die vanaf vandaag te beluisteren is) krijgen we alvast een uniek voorsmaakje van het opkomende album van Kevin Parker en co. Even voorstellen – Scarlet Rose – let it go
Vrijdag 26 september is de nieuwe single ‘Let It Go’ van Scarlet Rose uitgebracht. Het nummer is de eerste track van hun nieuwe EP.
Het lied gaat over je problemen laten gaan, doorgaan met je leven en proberen er het beste van te maken.
De EP is opgenomen in de Dunk Studio in Zottegem, België en mede geproduceerd door Jannes Van Rossom.
Scarlet Rose is een indiepop band uit Aalst (regio 's-Hertogenbosch). Vlak voor de pandemie deed de band haar eerste optreden meteen maar in de befaamde Cavern Club tijdens het International Pop Overthrow Festival. Daarna volgde een tour door Nederland, shows op de radio bij onder andere Q-Music en brachten ze een eerste EP uit. In 2022 ging de band opnieuw naar Engeland voor een uitgebreide tour met wederom een show in de Cavern Club. Het hoogtepunt van 2023 ontstond toen de band de aftershow van ‘The Kooks’ in Afas Live mocht verzorgen. In 2024/2025 stond er een heuse ‘mini-European Tour gepland met meer dan 50 shows en ging de band aan de slag om fans voor zich te winnen in Nederland, België, Duitsland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk en stond de band op festivals als Oerol, Booster, Norden (GE), Pulptuur (BE) en Parade Festival.
Het nieuwe materiaal van de band kan worden beschreven als een liefdesbaby van de bands 'Vampire Weekend', 'Two Door Cinema Club' en 'Paul Simon' op een laag van Afrikaanse en Latijns-Amerikaanse ritmes.

In 2022 stopte Aroma di Amore … Maar de aanhoudende malaise en oorlog in en rond Gaza, de lamentabele houding van België en tal van Europese landen en de verschrikkelijke gruwelbeelden van een hongerende en platgeslagen Palestijnse bevolking in dat bezette gebied, heeft Aroma di Amore doen besluiten om toch nog een keer hun krachten te bundelen voor een protest en aanklacht song die deze genocide en de lauwe reacties erop aan de kaak stelt.
Hun gezamenlijke verontwaardiging hierover was te groot en we namen de song "Hel!" op in enkele dagen tijd.
De titel ‘Hel!’ zegt alles over de situatie in Gaza, net zoals het refrein: ‘Het gaat maar door, het gaat maar door, ik blijf roepen tot ik word gehoord!’
Opname, mix en mastering deed de band in eigen beheer.
De integrale opbrengst van dit nummer gaat naar 11.11.11.

Aroma di Amore is de Belgische band rond Elvis Peeters (auteur/zanger), Fred Angst (componist/gitarist) en Lo Meulen (componist/bassist).
Vooral de mix van vlijmscherpe maatschappijkritische Nederlandstalige antimilitaristische en pacifistische teksten op electro post punk wave valt op.
In 2022 deden ze nog een succesvolle afscheidstournee (o.a. in de Ancienne Belgique) maar hielden de leden nog contact met elkaar en werkten ze occasioneel nog samen.

"To one degree or another, we all have an intimate relationship with stories: those we tell by the fireside, those we've lived or dreamed, those drawn from films, folklore or fairy tales. Each, in its own way, feeds our need for the imaginary, our desire to escape. When pianist and composer Camille-Alban Spreng founded Dear Uncle Lennie in 2022, it was with this very desire: to question the evocative power of stories, without words, through brief instrumental forms. The project takes the form of a chamber trio with guitarist Benjamin Sauzereau and banjoist Marco Giongrandi, recurring companions and players on the Brussels jazz scene.
The band's first album, initiated this work on the short, intimate format inspired in particular by the art of haiku. The underlying theme is a fantasized America: that of the gold rush, westerns and great family frescoes as anchors. An imaginary world developed in eighteen brief, rawly expressed titles, dotted with mysterious places and characters with a constant concern to suggest rather than show. Like its predecessor, ‘Sister Juniper’ is a collection of snapshots. Twelve tracks, this time more variable in length (between one and eight minutes), but all sharing the same allusive quest. ‘Dear Niece Thelma’, ‘Two Is Not An Army’ or ‘Behind The Barn Grew Three Little Trees’: so many equivocal, photogenic song titles, where the shadow of an intimate epic is outlined. At least, we're guessing, from the family members, mysterious numbers, house settings deployed here like clues to an uneventful plot, a disjointed narrative whose chapters have been deliberately jumbled.
So, where do we stand here? The album is, in a way, the second season of this musical and family laboratory. With a few differences: in addition to the original miniatures, there are longer pieces, more complex in their narration. ‘Daniele’, for example, starts off with a whimsical energy before unfolding with astonishing delicacy, or the polyrthymic ‘Platoon Five’, gradually developing into a joyous, solar trance. Some tracks are minimalist, contemplative, while others are achieved through the accumulation and interweaving of sound sources. The guitar electrifies the acoustic sources, the banjo deepens the suggestive expression of the whole, the piano is inspired by fingerpicking, blurring the registers. The aim is always the same: to expand the labyrinth of forms employed, to lead us astray without ever losing us in these landscapes with their false airs of an imaginary OST.
The trio extended these explorations by entrusting the recording and mixing of their album to producer Koen Gisen, renowned for his approach to recording and accurate reproduction of acoustic sources. This collaboration is complemented by that of Antwerp clarinettist Joachim Badenhorst, who is featured on certain pieces. This wind instrument provides a means of counterbalancing the short, percussive sounds induced by strummed and struck strings.
Musically, ‘Sister Juniper’ extends the atmosphere of the first album, with its willingness to visit several traditions and genres without ever settling on one. Folk songwriting rubs shoulders with minimalist, repetitive music, jazz meets country in a wide variety of instrumental expressions. Here and there, we can detect many inspirations: Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Rossen or Bill Frisell, to name but a few. But it would be a betrayal of the project’s originality to link it to the artists from whom it borrows, since the aim is more to create a new folklore, free as possible from all conventions.

Dear Uncle Lennie is a trio formed in 2022 by pianist and composer Camille-Alban Spreng with guitarist Benjamin Sauzereau and Marco Giongrandi on banjo. The three musicians share many common projects and over the past 10 years have developed a common affinity for intimate and sensitive music, experimental research and creation of new musical languages. The trio released their first album in 2022 on Yolk Records (Victoire du jazz 2019 - Best Label). The project was awarded Revelation Jazz Magazine in the December 2022 issue, 4 stars in Le Soir, and the music was broadcast on France Inter, Fip Radio, Musique 3, BX1, Klara, etc. It was also well received by the public, which allowed the project, after a first Belgian release tour (Ghent, Brussels, Antwerp, Grimbergen, Eupen), to do another tour in Italy in March 2023 at the invitation of the Bergamo Jazz Festival (Bergamo, Milano, Genova, Brescia). Over the years, the trio has developed a unique group sound and proved to be a fantastic creative playground. These experiences inspired them to collaborate with Antwerp clarinettist Joachim Badenhorst and Ghent producer Koen Gisen on a new album 'Sister Juniper' to be released on BMC Records.
The trio's main idea is to create a repertoire inspired by small, compact and highly evocative poetic forms, and to apply to it a folk universe and a narrative imaginarium borrowed from the classic era of songwriting - in addition to exploring the acoustic possibilities of a small ensemble composed only of strings, adapting the language of finger-picking (a typically guitaristic technique) to piano playing, and generating a trance effect by blurring the acoustic boundaries between the different instruments. In addition to the influences already present on the first album (Joanna Newsom, Leonard Cohen, Sufjan Stevens, Sam Amidon), this new repertoire with Joachim Badenhorst includes other influences from improvised music (Fred Frith and Oren Ambarchi in particular) and jazz (Bill Frisell).
At the core of the Dear Uncle Lennie project is the desire to create a warm, wholesome, unique and welcoming environment during the live shows; a fireside where stories can be told. The trio, enhanced by the presence of Joachim Badenhorst, conjures up this imaginary world to arouse curiosity and invite audiences to take an interest in new music and new forms. In this sense, through the evocative titles of the songs, the hyper-narrative compositions and the atmospheric quality of the concerts, Dear Uncle Lennie has created a world with its own characters, its own stories and its own fantasy world. As Jacques Prouvost put it in a review after the album release concert in Brussels in December 2022: The power of this trio is to take you into the unknown without losing you. To thrill you without scaring you. It is a (concept) concert in the form of a children tale or rather for adults who have retained a child soul.

Drummer-composer Tom Skinner is set to release Kaleidoscopic Visions, his second solo album, out 26th September 2025 via Brownswood Recordings.
Kaleidoscopic Visions showcases Skinner drawing together the many threads of his career as one of the UK's most versatile and free-thinking contemporary musicians. Performing and recording with Sons of Kemet, The Smile, David Byrne, Meshell Ndegeocello, Alabaster DePlume, Floating Points and Peter Zummo as well as a wide range of collaborations across London's vibrant improvised and electronic scene, Skinner's diverse touchpoints are brought together in an album of quiet power and profound truths, reflecting his journey so far and opening the road towards what is to come.
Where Skinner's 2022 debut Voices of Bishara drew inspiration from Abdul Wadud's 1978 cello masterpiece 'By Myself', Kaleidoscopic Visions shifts toward more personal, fully composed material - brought to life by the intuitive improvisations of both long-time bandmates and new high-profile collaborations. As Piotr Orlov reflects in the album write-up, the result is a record that chronicles "the importance of considering the view from the middle of one's own life, taking stock alongside memories and family, heroes and friends new and old."
Kaleidoscopic Visions unfolds across two distinct sonic landscapes. Side A presents entirely instrumental compositions performed by Skinner's live Bishara band with electric guitar on two tracks courtesy of Portishead's Adrian Utley.
Skinner's musical world opens further on Side B, where a collection of poised vocal collaborations stretch out from jazz and improvisation towards a more dream-like, soulful sound. The centerpiece is "The Maxim," a ten-minute collaboration with Grammy Award-winning Meshell Ndegeocello, a dubby, spacious meditation on life and death, delivered with a free-spirited grace.
The album goes on to feature South Carolina-based singer Contour (Khari Lucas) who appears on the low-lit soul ballad 'Logue', and closes with 'See How They Run', featuring London keyboardist-vocalist Yaffra (Jonathan Geyevu). It is the album's most overtly lyrical track, an articulate exposition of jazz-inflected spoken word that speaks not only to the genre-fluid nature of the music but the breadth of Skinner's palette.
This should come as no surprise. On Kaleidoscopic Visions, one of London's most vital musical figures gives us a sparkling glimpse of the multi-coloured lens through which his unique sound is now refracting.

Live electronica is wat Gamma Rave drijft, het nieuwste project van Will Harwood (Gadje Scum), Sanne Werkers (Brazzmatazz, Den Hoed Music), Jonas Nyaarr (Idealus Maximus, GoToEleven) en Geert de Waegeneer (Thou, BOMA Studio).
De band wil de energie van de dansvloer naar het live circuit brengen met een frisse mix van synthetische elektronische klanken en een dosis rauwe punk.
Bovenal is de band evenzeer “live” als “elektronisch”, met een dynamische sound die constant van stijl en stemming wisselt. Songs worden vaak ingezet met een sinistere trip-hop groove, , om, na een naar hip-hop ruikende opbouw helemaal los te breken in een schreeuwende Drum & Bass climax. Een gezonde dosis dub, dubstep, rock, en techno houdt de songs fris en verrassend.
De band mocht al het podium delen met grootheden als Asian Dub Foundation, Moon Hooch en Henge, ze sloten in het verleden al de Gentse Feesten af en tourden meermaals doorheen het VK (Boomtown Fair, Balter, …); zo staat Gamma Rave garant voor een kolkende dansvloer, keer op keer.
Over We Won’t Move (ft. Cula Mzansi):
Doorheen de menselijke geschiedenis zijn gemeenschappen geconfronteerd met onderdrukking, vervolging, uitbuiting en genocide. Verandering komt voort uit mensen die weigeren zich te onderwerpen, die niet wijken en geen duimbreed toegeven, zelfs niet tegenover deze wreedheden.
Dit nummer en deze videoclip (met de Zuid-Afrikaanse zanggroep Cula Mzansi, olv legendarische zangeres/activiste Stella Khumalo) willen een brug slaan en eer betonen aan deze daden van verzet: van hun eigen strijd tegen het apartheidsregime tot de huidige strijd van het Palestijnse volk, en alle andere vormen van verzet tegen onderdrukkers.

Rudolf Hecke over “The Ending Song”: ‘Als ik mijn dochter Querelle van 21 vertel “misschien is dit wel het laatste album dat ik maak” dan kijkt ze me verbolgen aan en antwoordt: oudere mensen hebben niet het prerogatief van “voor het laatst”, ook jongeren weten hun pad soms abrupt afgebroken. De stilte die dan valt is die van een schuldig man. 45 jaar geleden ging ik op pad en ik bewandel het nog steeds. Zonder overrompelend succes, maar nog steeds zonder meester noch God. Met de geest en het hart van de eerste stap, er valt nog zoveel nieuws te vertellen al kom ik stilaan adem te kort. Het is een zegen die vele jonge mensen wordt miskend. ‘The Ending Song’ is een lied van vertroosting, de opdracht die ik mezelf heb opgelegd mijn eigen pad te banen, het leven ermee plaveien, is rijker geworden. Het wenkende einde doorzien als een eeuwig nieuw begin. De prachtige, zalvende, jonge stem van Yassin Joris helpt me hierbij. En de clip die mijn dochter Querelle omheen mijn song heeft gedrapeerd, verse zeilen op een zich steeds heftiger werende zee. Oud en jong verenigd in pijn, vergeving, dankbaarheid, trots… ‘The Ending Song’.
God=doG is het collectief rond Belpop-icoon Rudolf Hecke en bestaat uit Yassin Joris (Jokke, Naima Joris), Nikkie van Lierop (IH8CAMERA, Erotic Dissidents, Praga Khan), Klaas Tomme (Iskander Moon, Illuminae) en Toon Derison (Steven De Bruyn, El Fish).
Rudolf Hecke bracht in 1989 zijn eerste solo-album “God is dog spelled backwards” uit. De plaat werd prompt door De Morgen uitgeroepen tot beste Belgische album van het jaar. Humo kroonde hem tot “De Nick Cave van Vlaanderen”. Vervolgens trok Rudolf op een never-ending tour langs jeugdclubs en festivals. Hij trad ook vaak op als support van internationale topacts; Iggy Pop, Sugarcubes, Triffids, Einsturzende Neubauten, SPK, Peter Hammill, Bob Geldof, Björk…
Daarvoor had hij al Belpop geschiedenis geschreven met Company Of State, ‘electronic body music’ pioniers, waarmee hij door Europa tourde met o.a. Eyeless in Gaza, Neon Judgement, Front 242, La Muerte…
36 jaar en vele muzikale avonturen (Rudolf kent een indrukwekkende spreidstand als songwriter van psychedelic pop met Pop In Wonderland over soul&rnb met Yasmina Karraz tot verstilde folk met Elsje Helewaut en Vera Coomans) later is hij terug met een sterk, donker en sfeervol album dat vergelijkbaar is met het werk van bijvoorbeeld This Mortal Coil: verschillende stijlen van nummers gezongen door verschillende bandleden. Het album is geproduceerd door Hecke, David Poltrock en Ian Caple (Tindersticks, Tricky, Alain Bashung…). Ook special guest Elsje Helewaut verzorgt de leadvocals op één van de songs.
Tot overmaat van spreidstand: Rudolf heeft ook bewezen een begaafd auteur en spreker te zijn. Hij tourt met diverse lezingen (Gainsbourg, Orbison, De Sixties) zeer intensief door Vlaanderen en eind 2024 publiceerde hij zijn negende boek ‘Hoe ruw is de steen?’, waarin hij zich verdiept in de vrijmetselarij. De reis naar dat boek ging gepaard met de opname van nieuwe God=doG-nummers. Er ontstond een wederzijdse invloed, symboliek, vragen, inzichten, reflectie.
In de talrijke mysterieuze en fascinerende liveshows, wordt een ijzersterke, intense performance doorweven met zeer persoonlijke verhalen van Hecke, gastoptredens van auteurs die rock ’n roll uitademen en een interactief ritueel dat geen enkel publiek koud laat. Kortom Rudolf Hecke & God=doG staat garant voor een unieke en zéér aparte avond.

Jera On Air 2026 – van 25 t-m 27 juni 2026 - Jera On Air 2026 trapt af met The Offspring, Papa Roach, Rise Against en meer
De stofwolken van de meer dan geslaagde 31e editie zijn nog maar amper neergedaald en als je heel goed luistert galmen de laatste flarden van snoeiharde riffs, grunts en beats nog na over de festivalweide. Tóch is men in Ysselsteyn en omstreken alweer druk bezig met Jera On Air 2026. Tijdens het weekend van 25, 26 en 27 juni verandert het Noord-Limburgse dorp weer in dé hotspot voor punk- hardcore- en metalcore-liefhebbers van over de hele wereld. Met het aankondigen van onder andere Papa Roach, The Offspring, Rise Against en All Time Low, is er genoeg om nu al naar uit te kijken. De eerste twintig bands op de festivalposter beloven een nu al legendarische 32e jaargang voor het grootste alternatieve festival van de Benelux.
Op diezelfde poster voor Jera On Air 2026 sieren ook de namen van Pennywise, Bury Tomorrow, Wargasm, Thrown, Malevolence, Ignite, Gridiron, Magnolia Park, Distant, Mouth Culture en Jaya The Cat. Net als die van The Menzingers, Get The Shot, Desolated, Imminence en Ho99o9.
Wereldberoemde punkrockers
Terwijl de laatste early bird-tickets voor de komende editie de afgelopen dagen over de toonbank vlogen, was de organisatie achter het festival druk met het vastleggen van een flink aantal fraaie bands. Daaronder ook de wereldberoemde punkrockers van The Offspring. Met klassiekers als Pretty Fly (for a White Guy), Self Esteem en The Kids Aren’t Alright, zijn ze bekend en geliefd over de hele wereld. Dat blijkt ook uit de meer dan 40 miljoen verkochte albums en de miljarden streams op Spotify. Duizelingwekkende aantallen, die live gepaard gaan met duizelingwekkende shows. Later dit jaar staan ze in een uitverkochte Ziggo Dome, maar in 2026 hoor je alle wereldhits van deze superpunkers op Jera On Air.
Circle pit na circle pit
Ook meer dan 25 jaar na de grote doorbraak raast frontman Jacoby Shaddix van Papa Roach nog als een wervelwind over de bühne. Dat bleek deze zomer eens te meer. Onder andere op Lowlands, waar de legendarische rockers een liveshow lieten zien waar nog heel lang over werd nagepraat, zorgden niet alleen klassiekers als Last Resort – met anderhalf miljard streams op Spotify - en Scars voor de ene circle pit na de andere. Ook de overige nu-metal klappers op de setlist mochten rekenen op een uitzinnig onthaal.
Punkband Rise Against staat sinds de oprichting eind jaren 90 bekend om hun mix van energieke punk, maatschappijkritische teksten én vooral melodieuze meesterwerken. Na de definitieve doorbraak zo’n twintig jaar geleden is de band rond zanger Tim McIlrath niet meer weg te denken uit de punkrockscene. Iets dat zeker ook gezegd mag worden van All Time Low. Na ontelbaar veel platina en gouden platen, is de band inmiddels een graag geziene gast in de Amerikaanse talkshows van Jimmy Kimmel, Ellen en James Corden. Daar weten ze een miljoenenpubliek te boeien met hun aanstekelijke poppunk. Het levert ze niet alleen een trouwe fanbase op, maar ook een plekje in de lijst van 50 beste poppunkalbums ooit gemaakt, volgens het toonaangevende Rolling Stone Magazine. Tijdens Jera On Air 2026 laten ze zonder twijfel wederom zien waarom.
