Dagoba - I don’t like to be inspired by politics or anything like that. We’re not that kind of band. I like poetry, specially dark poetry, what comes from inside, not the outside

Modern metallers DAGOBA are back! After putting their stamp on the metal scene with their unique blend of metal and neckbreaking grooves, and relentlessly touring and sharing the stage with legendary acts like Metallica, Machine Head and In Flames, DAGOBA’s undeniable talent was discovered by Napalm Records.
Now, the French four-piece is gearing up to reach the next level with their most ambitious material yet - the punishing new full-length, ‘By Night’. On the occasion of this release, we had a very nice conversation with singer/front man Shawter, we also went back in time, and further plans for the future were revealed.

Dagoba exists since 1997 (if I am correct) - What are the highs and lows of the band so far?
Everything was perfect until this pandemic (haha). We seem to live in an unexpected dream. When you can live from your passion – in our case our music – it’s just a dream came true, it’s perfect. But when the pandemic stops us from going on tour, it becomes a little less of a dream so to speak. I think that describes the highs and lows up to now.

You have made some wonderful records, but I think Dagoba is a band you have to see on stage, where the music is going to a higher level, do you agree about this statement?
That’s a correct statement.

When I think of metal in France besides Dagoba, a band like Goijra comes to mind, they also play on big regular festivals nowadays, and play outside France. I not see much other France bands doing that. Is there an explanation for that? And does the fact that a band like Goijra had a break true not changed something, and also play in your favor?
No, they did it their way and did it good, we do it our own way. We are indeed the two biggest French bands, outside France, in the metal scene. But it’s not that they helped us, or we helped them. There are also many other great metal bands in France, but they mostly keep it inside France. They don’t travel that much. But it starts getting better I must say. Still, at the moment it’s only the two of us really playing outside France.

As far as Dagoba is concerned, I like the emotionally charged way in which you sing, and the bombastic music (which I think you should take as a compliment) that sticks to the ribs. Is that the right description? Or do I see it wrong? Are you an emotional person :)
Of course. I am writing the lyrics since forever, I’m an artist. And an artist needs to be emotional. I like emotions, and specially my own emotions. I like living in an emotional world, otherwise we’re not human anymore and become robots.

The new single 'on the run' sounds wistful and melancholic again with a metal side to it, is there a personal message or story line attached?
We wanted to compose a piano/vocal song for a long time. When I started to write the piano line and sang on it, my voice was too low. We wanted a female singer to level a higher tone, and that came really naturally.

What I also find so wonderful about Dagoba, I've been following you since that first record, it's the 8th in the meantime - if I'm not mistaken - and yet you keep on reinventing yourself, and going off in a different direction, is that a conscious path that you take?
We really want to propose something fresh. We don’t want to do deliver the same recipe over and over again. Otherwise it gets boring, we’ve just been talking about being a robot. As men you grown up, you change your way of thinking. And that’s the way we’re working on the band to, we want purpose to involve in music , like we involve in our personal live.

Some other side I love of Dagoba , Dagoba’s lyrical content and soundscape always seems to be of a dark nature. I do have a dark nature to, I feel comfortable in the dark. Is that the right description, you have a ‘ dark nature’?
That is a correct analysis. You can sometimes feel comfortable in the dark. I like the melancholy, like something dark but also something bright, but not in a depressed way of thinking and living.

I find it also, more than ever before,  in the new album to that, “dark nature”. Is there been changing something in your life that you feel more comfortable in that dark , getting a little older?
In fact I’m a very happy man. It’s just that melancholic part that’s always coming back. But it’s not that it’s changed now, it’s always been that way.

One of the few advantages to this pandemic, if I as a journalist have no more questions, it is an inspiration. So, how did you as a band, musician and human being get through this period?  Did you come out of it stronger as a band, do you think? Some bands have thrown the towel.
I
t’s good that some people, like you, start to see how difficult this situation is for musicians. After two years of doing nothing, getting back to a normal life and starting to play and go on tour and so on. It’s very confronting. For us everything is going fine, we’re about to release a new album and of course there is a lot of expectations. We’re going back on tour in April, if everything works out fine. For us, during the pandemic, we stay positive.

There are also bands who found new inspiration because of this pandemic. Was it a source of inspiration for new songs for example?
No, I don’t like to be inspired by politics or anything like that. We’re not that kind of band. I like poetry, especially dark poetry, what comes from inside and not the outside;

What are the expectation of this new album to you?
I just hope it’s going to be ok. For now, the first reviews were really good. We hope the fans will appreciate this album, because it’s a little bit different from what we’ve composed before. And of course, I hope we can have fun on stage and show off this album live.

Are there any tour plans for the near future, festivals or something? In Belgium?
We’re supposed to play at Summer Breeze festival. Also in Spain, a festival in Portugal, so yes we’re playing some summer festivals. I’m not sure if there is a festival in Belgium yet, there are so many changes and festivals have been post ponded, I should check it out.

You’ve been touring across the world, according to you what are the differences between different audiences across the world ?
We had some very good experiences on stage. For the previous album we’ve been on tour in China and Japan. We’ve been to some exotic islands. We’ve been to Africa. It was all fantastic, I can’t pick just one and say: “this was the best’’. This way of live is just a dream come true, so I’m not complaining.

Making plans, it wasn't easy until now, but still, what are the future plans for the band? Both on and off the stage?
We want to present this album on stage and take it out into the world. We want to go back to the US, to South-America; back to China and Japan of course. And big summer festivals would be wonderful as well.

At the moment I’m already doing some concerts, with sitting places and mouth masks on, I guess that’s not the way you want to do it? Because personally I think metal needs a standing crowd of people ? You agree
We haven’t been doing concerts with sitting places, we refused that. Our music needs to be where the people are standing and enjoy what happens on stage.

And streaming a concert? What is your opinion about that? I have seen some streaming concerts last year. It's not my favorite way to enjoy a concert, but I did find that the threshold for discovering something is lower. This way, people who would otherwise hesitate to go to your concerts, can still discover you. Is this statement correct?
It could be a way to promote yourself indeed, but I’m an old fashion guy. I hate the internet. I hate things like youtube and so on, that’s not the real thing to me. Live music is live music. It’s not something you have to bring behind the screen. It’s not really for me… like this interview, it would be nicer to talk to each other live, and not via this screen. No, for me it’s just not the real thing and that’s why we don’t want to do it.

After all these years - you have more than left your mark on the metal scene in Europe - are there still ambitions?
The biggest ambition is to continue to play for more and more people. And maybe it’s good to have more followers on YouTube or Facebook, that would be cool too.          And we'll just continue what we’re doing best, going on tour for let’s say forever, that’s our biggest goal for now and the future.

What is your advice to young bands who want to follow in your footsteps?
Three things: Work hard, believe in yourself and pursue something that nobody ever pursued before. That’s the most important advice I want to give. Sometimes they may only be on Facebook and Youtube, and forget to work hard. It’s very important to work hard on tour and to make new music. So just be honest, believe in yourself and keep working hard every day… and pursue something original.
