Even voorstellen - aankomend album van Family Stereo, ‘the thread’
Family Stereo is het alter ego van singer-songwriter Blake Watt, die op 31 juli zijn debuutalbum The Thread uitbrengt.
The Thread is een verzameling van op folk geïnspireerde songs die op subtiele wijze reflecteren op afstand en verbondenheid. Met een verhalende stijl laat Watt veel aan de verbeelding over, waardoor de nummers des te krachtiger binnenkomen. Het resultaat is een uitnodigend, dynamisch en licht filmisch album.
De plaat verschijnt na een reeks veelbelovende EP's van de 25-jarige Blake, zoon van Tracey Thorn en Ben Watt van Everything But The Girl. De ontwikkeling ten opzichte van dat eerdere werk is duidelijk hoorbaar. Met zijn debuutplaat kiest Watt bewust voor verfijning en verdieping.

It is not easy listening. It's essential.
Over the last two decades, Protomartyr—vocalist Joe Casey, drummer Alex Leonard, bassist Scott Davidson, and multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Greg Ahee—have built one of the most rewarding and often exhilarating bodies of work in recent memory by veering in and out of darkness, grappling with what most frightens us, saddens us, disgusts us, embarrasses and enrages us, and with a gallows humor for the ages, gives a sense of the comedy inherent in so much that we encounter. Essentially, the stuff that makes us human.
Casey has imagined his country as an aging hotel here, each song a room haunted by its own troublesome guest, as on today's "Sounds We Cannot Hear," which arrives with a video starring Nate Varrone (Maddie's Secret and The Bear). The song finds Casey examining the slow paralysis of modern life: "The scroll deforms the day // Poet screamed, "Goodbye everybody!" // Leaping from the liner Orizaba // As it traversed the Caribbean Sea // A new vulgar company is targeting me."

Musically, Ahee has built worlds within a world, drawing new influence from the Middle East and '50s exotica, finding common ground between dread and joy, a speciality. All of it—Leonard's drumming in particular—is rendered more tangible and terrifying by Fridmann, whose son, Jon, contributes horns. You can feel the stakes in every song, feel the band levitating to meet them. They've never sounded more powerful. Take it from someone who knows: Iggy Pop.
What is a Protomartyr? I don't really know, but I imagine it may refer to an earthly being who wants a little more than the usual shit out of life. A person or persons who want to be part of something beautiful and interesting, with the understanding that you may pay a price for that, and that others who come after will have an easier time. Kind of like Jesus.
So then there is Protomartyr the band. Four guys who are very, very skilled musicians and creators who I suspect would be totally fucked without the intervention of their talents, which are considerable.
They are, to put it crudely, a kind of rock band out of Detroit. That's a subject I know something about.
And they've made a new album. It is highly themed and symphonic in its reach. I could call it a kind of drive-through Sgt. Peppers, but that would miss the mark. This record is Wagnerian, it reminds me very much of the Opera Tristan and Isolde (by Richard Wagner). Musically, it sounds modal, and kind of chromatic, like I imagine Celtic war horns might sound in some forgotten battle. The singer, Joe Casey, is blessed with a beautiful voice that you want to listen to, but he stays perverse enough to keep things interesting when he wants to get petulant or a little bitchy.
One of my favorite moments on the record is when he simply announces, all alone, "We got a bad review." Which presides a furious outpouring from the entire group. Wow! I wish I thought of that! And in today's world, how relatable! Who hasn't gotten a bad review? Plumbers, shoe salesmen, etc etc etc. right up to Influencers. All is reviewed... I'm trying hard not to let this attempt at biography turn into a review, but hey, I've been listening to these guys for quite a while now and I get the feeling that they are a slow growth item, something that is gaining followers, listeners, and respect little by little, over the long haul. There's a lot of content here. The four of them can shift rhythms and harmonics very, very smoothly in a way that seems effortless. It's the mark of fine arts in a popular group.

Even voorstellen - Debuutalbum van de post-punk band Opus Kink, ‘the sweet goodbye’
Met hun ongrijpbare mix van punk, jazz en country heeft Opus Kink zich ontwikkeld tot een van de meest eigenzinnige bands uit de Britse underground. Sinds hun ontstaan in Brighton in 2017 staan ze bekend om hun intense liveshows en een geluid waarin post-punk, no wave, folk, cabaret en country samenkomen.
Gedragen door een krachtige blazerssectie en scherpe, vaak absurdistische teksten over vervreemding, geweld en menselijke tekortkomingen, creëert de band een unieke muzikale wereld. Hun reputatie werd gebouwd in DIY-venues door heel Europa, waar hun optredens hen een cultstatus heeft opgeleverd.

De koningin van de Amerikaanse neo-soul brengt op 14 oktober haar nieuwe liveconcept IMEHO naar Bozar. Eerder deze maand trapte Erykah Badu haar nieuwe wereldtournee af in Tokio, waar ze onder de titel An Intimate Experience with Erykah Badu voor het eerst dit bijzondere concept presenteerde. IMEHO is geen traditionele concertreeks, maar een intieme, grotendeels geïmproviseerde ervaring waarin stem, piano en percussie samensmelten. Samen met haar langdurige muzikale partner RC Williams bouwt Badu elke avond de voorstelling in realtime op, zonder vast script. Het is een artistiek alter ego waarbij elk concert uniek is en slechts één keer bestaat.
De in Dallas geboren zangeres is een van de meest inspirerende en invloedrijke Afro-Amerikaanse artiesten van haar generatie. Haar soulrepertoire bouwt voort op de rijke traditie van iconen als Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone en Chaka Khan, terwijl in de warme, jazzrijke harmonieën van haar muziek ook de invloed van grootheden als Miles Davis en John Coltrane doorklinkt. Na een fantastisch jaar waarin hij zijn 25-jarige carrière vierde met concerten doorheen België, Nederland en Duitsland, met als apotheose twee avonden in de Lotto Arena in Antwerpen zet Jasper Steverlinck de volgende stap. In 2026 verschuift de focus naar nieuwe muziek, met als hoogtepunt een volledig nieuwe liveshow genaamd A New Era, op vrijdag 27 november 2026 in de Lotto Arena. 'Pure Love' is a record she made having discovered the confidence and freedom to make exactly the kind of album she wants to make: a soulful organic one, on which she could sing from the heart. And it's certainly worth the wait, a triumphant return in which her warm, throaty, unmistakably expressive contralto wraps itself around the deep soul, jazz and classic rock that has always been closest to her heart.
Experiences old and new soak into the material, with influences including Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks', alongside Joe Cocker's 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' for prioritising spirit over perfection. It was recorded at the countryside escape of Middle Farm in Devon with producer Peter Miles, while other collaborators included Anna Krantz (Ed Sheeran), Justin Parker (Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Sia), Anu Pillai (Lewis Capaldi, Ladyhawke), Peter Miles (Dodie, Orla Gartland, Architects), DJ Yoda (Danger Mouse, Nubya Garcia), Julia Church (John Summit, Slander, San Holo, Le Youth), Alex O'Shaughnessy (mxmtoon, Bellah Mae) and Jonny Henderson (Robben Ford, Matt Schofield, Ian Siegal).
Gabriella says, "'Pure Love' is the record I've always wanted to make. The songs and lyrics are more unfiltered and the recordings have a rawness to them so I feel like it's the most pure record I've made. It was recorded live to tape during a harvest moon and I like to think of the songs like ripe fruit finally ready to be consumed after lots of watering, tending and patience."
That classic sound particularly shines in the new single 'YRU Hanging Around'. Gabriella sounds like an old school soul veteran who has just stepped out of Muscle Shoals, while the band around her pulsates with an irrepressible energy. Lyrically, it's a timeless kiss-off sung with utmost conviction -simply, get serious, or get out of her life.
She adds, "'YRU Hanging Around' is about the realisation that you've been waiting on the approval of others for way too long. It's about that aha moment when all of a sudden you have an epiphany that you don't need anyone's permission to live the life you want except your own."
Gabriella's remarkable voice is there for all to witness with the recent performance of 'Pure Love' live from Middle Farm, accompanied by her band who bring a Stax Records-style musicality to the session.

As well as The Great Escape and the Beverley Knight tour, Gabriella's return to the music scene also has seen her play shows in Australia with The Corrs, as well as a BRITS / War Child show in London alongside Jack Savoretti and Katherine Jenkins. More live plans are taking shape in the months to come, with Camper Calling (August 29th) already confirmed. Today she also announces details of a full UK headline tour.

Even voorstellen - Koala Disco vermenigvuldigt zich: derde album ‘Marsupial Orgy’ komt eraan
Elf nummers, negen gastartiesten, één losgeslagen buideldier
Er broeit iets in de thuisstudio van Niels Tuijaerts, alias Koala Disco. Na twee albums vol kafkaiaanse krautpunk (want nee, postpunk of psychedelische rock dekt de lading niet, dank u) gooit het buideldier het op zijn derde plaat Marsupial Orgy over een heel andere, drukbezette boeg.
Voor deze derde worp zette Niels de deuren van zijn thuisstudio wagenwijd open en nodigde hij zowat de helft van de Belgische muziekscene uit om mee te rollebollen. Het resultaat: elf nummers waarop negen gastartiesten samen met Niels alle kanten uitzwerven qua genre, allemaal opgenomen én geproduceerd door Niels zelf. Chaotisch? Absoluut. Samenhangend? Ook dat. De kernidentiteit van Koala Disco houdt de boel gelukkig stevig bij elkaar, zelfs als de rest van de plaat alle kanten opspat.

Over Koala Disco
Koala Disco is het muzikale pseudoniem van muzikant en illustrator Niels Tuijaerts. Hoewel de muziek van dit creatieve zoogdier vaak wordt gelabeld als postpunk en psychedelische rock, omschrijft de band (Niels is de bezieler, maar Koala Disco is wel degelijk een band) zichzelf eerder als kafkaiaanse krautpunk. Koala Disco won Jonge Wolven 2024 en won de publieksprijs van Humo's Rock Rally in 2024.

Het absolute einde van een tijdperk: Al Jourgensen trekt definitief de stekker eruit. De legendarische industrial-pionier kondigt de allerlaatste tournee van Ministry aan, met een exclusieve passage op zondag 4 april 2027 in Ancienne Belgique in Brussel. Na 17 studioalbums, decennia aan sonische terreur en het eigenhandig uitvinden van het industrial-rockgenre is het voor 'Uncle Al' welletjes geweest. Hij trekt nog één keer alle registers open en brengt daarvoor Die Krupps mee als special guest. Tickets zijn beschikbaar via livenation.be.
Voor Jourgensen is de cirkel rond. Van de vroege new wave en synthpop op 'With Sympathy' (1983) tot het loodzware 'Twitch' (1986), het genrebepalende 'The Land Of Rape And Honey' (1988) en het succesvolle 'Psalm 69' (1992): Ministry veranderde het muzikale landschap voorgoed. Met deze afscheidstour zet de band een punt achter een carrière van meer dan veertig jaar. De tour volgt op de release van hun allerlaatste album 'Hate To Go (Take Out Or Delivery)', dat in het najaar verschijnt. De plaat belooft een vlijmscherp afscheid te worden, inclusief de terugkeer van Paul Barker. Single "Burned Out" geeft al eerste voorsmaakje van het album en is meteen een schot in de roos. Hoewel Jourgensen in zijn teksten de frustratie van zich afbijt dat er in veertig jaar politiek en maatschappelijk amper iets veranderd is, belooft het concert in Ancienne Belgique een energieke finale te worden. Samen met zijn liveband gaat Ministry strijdend ten onder. Verwacht een intense setlist waarin nieuw werk naadloos versmelt met de klassiekers die de blauwdruk vormden voor de industrial metal.
Dit is de allerlaatste keer voor Belgische fans om afscheid te nemen van een van de meest invloedrijke bands uit de geschiedenis van het genre. Mis het niet! Op 4 april in Ancienne Belgique.
