Good news for fans of The Hickey Underworld! Only a few weeks after the successful release of their fourth studio album "Cold Sun", the band announces a reissue of their self-titled debut album from 2009. For Record Store Day, taking place this week Saturday, a limited edition will be available, which includes the 12 inch vinyl as well as a special 7 inch with outtakes ("Sick of Boys" and "Blonde Fire"). To celebrate the band will also play a free live show on RDS 18 April, at Vooruit Cafe Ghent. All info on Record Store Day can be found at the Music Mania website.
The Hickey Underworld was founded by childhood friends Younes Faltakh and Jonas Govaerts. They named themselves after a song by The Nation of Ulysses, one of theirfavorite bands on Dischord Records, the legendary indie label of Fugazi frontman Ian MacKaye.
In 2006, they won the final of Humo's Rock Rally and their career took off rapidly. "Future Words," soon became a hit and received heavy airplay on Studio Brussel and Radio Willy. That Dischord influence is clearly audible on their self-titled debut album, released in 2009 on the French label Naïve. The album, produced by Bent Van Looy, Niek Meul, and Reinhard Vanbergen of Das Pop, also revealed the band's more pop-oriented side — particularly in the breakout single.
From the beginning, the band paid great attention to their visual identity. The singles "Blonde Fire" and "Future Words" came with grotesque, surreal music videos — both shot by Nicolas Karakatsanis, the award-winning cinematographer behind Bullhead (Rundskop) and Cruella, and an early fan of The Hickey Underworld.
