After a turbulent journey of farewell, self-discovery, and artistic rebirth, Laura-Mary Carter returns on 6 August with her new single 'June Gloom', a dreamy, bittersweet preview of her long-awaited debut album 'Bye Bye Jackie', releasing on 26 September via V2 Records.
Known as one half of the alternative rock duo Blood Red Shoes, Carter now opts for a different tone: rawer, softer, and more honest.
"This album is a funeral of the past life and saying goodbye to it, to make space for a new life full of fantasy and cool stories," Carter says about 'Bye Bye Jackie'.
The new single 'June Gloom', written together with IDLES-guitarist Lee Kiernan, showcases her evolving sound: lounge-like, melancholic, and carried by a George Harrison-esque vibe. Originally written as an acoustic song, it grew into a nostalgic dream full of emotional layers. "The writing came to me organically, mostly at night, in moments of emotional confusion,"
'Bye Bye Jackie' is the most personal track: "It's about letting go of stress and old patterns." And 'Four Letter Words'? That's her live favourite: "It's got energy, it's catchy, and it creates an instant connection with people." Technically, she chose warmth over perfection: vintage equipment, tape recordings, live takes with mellotron, Farfisa and omnichord. No digital gloss, just the rustle of a real moment.

'Bye Bye Jackie' is an album about love, loss, female identity, and finding freedom off the beaten path. With vintage recording techniques (think: tape, Farfisa, omnichord) and an atmospheric feel reminiscent of 1960s French films, this is Carter's most personal work yet.
"I want people to feel connection, nostalgia, sadness, hope, real emotions," she says about what she wants to convey with her music.
Laura-Mary hopes this album inspires people to write their own stories. To, like her, let go of the old and make room for a new chapter: full of fantasy, imperfection, and genuine connection.
The album balances between minimalism and cinematic scope, between the past and a new beginning.
